About Makhe

Why Makhe exists.

The story, the name, and the belief behind a verified community platform built for South Africa — not the pitch. For the product, head to the home page.

Why we built Makhe

South Africans deserve a space online that is honest.

Today, a resident who wants to buy a fridge on Marketplace, chat to a neighbour on WhatsApp, or respond to a bursary ad takes on the risk of the platform — scams, catfishing, fake accounts, unverified agents, promises that do not hold.

The trust deficit is so normalised that South Africans have learned to expect it.

We built Makhe to be the opposite of that. A platform where every user is verified, every transaction is protected, every official account is real, and every neighbourhood is scoped to where people actually live.

Trust is not a feature on Makhe. It is the foundation.

What the name means
Makhe
/ˈmaː.kɛ/ · isiZulu
1
Neighbour Short for makhelwane — an isiZulu word for “neighbour”. It describes the close, sometimes complex relationships in South African communities: neighbours, friends, and family alike.
2
Build him / her An act of lifting others up. Community made, not given.

The word itself describes the platform: bringing neighbours together to build communities that work.

How verification works

A trust tier for every action.

Reading the feed takes a phone. Running a verified business takes more. Verification scales with the action.

Tier 1
Reader
Phone + email

Browse your feed, read posts, follow councillors.

Tier 2
Resident
Ward confirmed

Post to your feed, open incident tickets, use Safe Walk.

Tier 3
Verified
ID document

List on the marketplace and access escrow-protected trade.

Tier 4
Official
Biometric + org

Post as a councillor, business or verified organisation.

POPIA-aligned by design. We collect only what each feature needs. Your PIN never leaves your phone. Your ID is encrypted.
